General Information

  Rila National Park is situated on the territory of four administrative regions: Blagoevgrad, Sofia, Kyustendil and Pazardjik, eleven municipalities: Blagoevgrad, Simitli, Razlog, Belitsa, Yakoruda, Belovo, Kostenetz, Dolna Banya, Samokov, Sapareva Banya, Dupnitsa, and twenty five village’s and town’s territories.
  • Area: 81,046 hectares
  • Wooded area: 53,481 hectares
  • Treeless area: 27,565 hectares
  • 90% of all ecosystems are natural
  • There are four nature reserves, with a combined area of 16,222.1 hectares
  • Highest elevation: Mussala at 2,925 meters above sea level
  • Lowest elevation: the area above Blagoevgrad, at 800 meters above sea level

           The life of the population, which inhabits these regions, is permanently connected with the Rila Mountain. The National Park keeps natural inheritance and creates possibilities for subsistence of the population in the towns and villages around it, and for the economical prosperity of the country. The Park proposes conditions for scientific and educational activities. The basic water sources for the near towns and villages and for the whole country are situated on the Park’s territory.

           The Rila Mountain is a source of additional income for the local population. Every second resident of the towns and villages around the Park picks herbs, mushrooms, and wild fruits, which is an additional earning. These resources can be kept and can be used by many future generations if some strict rules, regulated in the Management Plan, are observed. The necessary licenses for the use of the natural resources on the Park’s territory are given by the Park’s administration.

           The National Park provides for jobs in the central administration and the offices at the different territory, most of the working people are local. The building of infrastructure and the realization of the projects is made mainly by the local executers.

           The development of the region and the prosperity of its population depend on the collaborative efforts of the Park and the local communities. There are good possibilities for developing the tourism – marvelous nature, local crafts, traditional meals, cultural monuments.
